Nintendo will not participate in E3 until 2023

Nintendo E3 2023 will have a massive hole to fill now that it’ll be missing the three biggest video game companies in the world.

Nintendo has stated to VentureBeat that it will not attend E3 in 2023.

As Nintendo didn’t have anything to offer, it was already rumoured that Nintendo would not be attending E3 in 2023. This is probably accurate. Before E3 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will launch, and the firm doesn’t appear to have any other significant first-party games on the horizon. Moreover, Metroid Prime 4 isn’t even close to being finished, and the Nintendo Switch Pro is already out of the question.

We’re just waiting for Microsoft to follow Nintendo’s lead now that it has formally announced its withdrawal and Sony’s non-participation was expected. Of course, it’s still possible that it may present the summer Xbox at E3 2023, as is customary. Yet following last year’s show’s success, Microsoft might take a chance this year by going solo, if only to see whether it can win two years in a row. What’s the worst that might happen, after all? If Microsoft’s summer display fails, it can always return to E3 in 2024.

The conversation around the E3 2023 lineup and what would happen to the remainder of the month after Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft each reveal their rumoured replacements for the E3 showcase gets increasingly intriguing.

In the end, we’re all in favour of the ESA and E3 recovering their footing. We learned from the COVID-19 pandemic that E3 doesn’t have to be the ultimate showcase, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist. Although losing the big three is difficult, there are many more video game companies that could benefit from their absence. It’s a part of gaming history. A platform would allow companies like Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Embracer Group, and Take-Two Interactive to promote all of their games without raising questions about whether or not they will be available on all platforms.
